Childproof Home Safety Tips

If you recently had a baby or are expecting one very soon, one of the first things you need to think about is child proofing your home for safety. Sometimes parents put off child proofing their home until their baby starts to crawl, but it’s best to go ahead and get it done before they become mobile. This will allow you to worry about getting it done in time, and enjoy your child as they begin to crawl. Here are some important areas of the home that needs to be childproofed.

Power Outlets

One of the first things your baby will try to investigate is the power outlets on your walls. They are low to the ground making it easy for little ones to put their fingers into. You can buy packs of plastic inserts that go into the outlets which will keep small fingers out of the way of danger.

Heavy Furniture

Any type of heavy furniture that stands up against the walls has a potential of falling over, especially if your baby pulls up on it. Make sure all furniture is secured to the wall. Think about things like bookcases, TV stands, dressers, and appliances. Always place heavier items on the bottom of the shelf or dresser to help balance out the weight. Make sure all drawers are closed securely and use childproof latches that keep them closed.

Baby Safety Gates

If you have stairs in your home, you will need to invest in a couple of quality baby safety gates. These prevent your baby from crawling up the stairs when on the bottom floor, and prevent them from falling down the stairs when on the upper level of the home. The best safety gates are ones that have an installed door for easy use by adults. They also hold up better than safety gates that use pressure.
